Thanks to the assistance of Massimo of Arianna & Friends, a very active tour operator in Peccioli, I am glad to write a few lines about these events that take place there in September.
Peccioli is a town near Lajatico, at about 15 minutes driving from our Italian property in Tuscany. Some images above show the beauty of its characteristic historical centre, it is worth a visit, especially in September.
In fact each Saturday of September is dedicated to a "Festa Rionale".
The "Rioni" in Peccioli are 4 plus another one of the Montecchio little borgo at circa 5 km from the town.
This year the first "Festa" will take place on September 3 and then for 4 consequent Saturdays until October 1.
For each of these "Feste" is scheduled a large meal in the streets of the historical centre of Peccioli, starting from 7PM into the late night.
Normally for a 3/5 courses meal you will be charged around 10 Euros, depending on the actual menu you will decide to have.
Each "Rione" develops a particular dish that becomes its specialty (see the Calendar below).
The vine is FREE!
In fact the vine producers of the area give a "damigiana" of red vine and one of white vine to each "Rione", who will serve it to the guests.
There are a number of ancillary activities going on, normally also dedicated to the children: live music in the streets and some dancing…..
These events attracts local people, from Pisa and the towns nearby, in the last few years they experienced a lot of people, circa 1.500/2.000 for each event. Of course the good wether is important but in case of rain the events are organised indoor, even though people would be much less.
The 2011 calendar is as follow:
September 3 – Rione Fosso – Speciality: Bocconcini di tacchino in umido con le olive
September 10 – Rione Mexico – Speciality: Seppie con la bietola
September 17 – Rione Carraia – Speciality: Cacciucco alla Livornese
September 24 – Rione Borgherucci – Speciality: Trippa rossa
October 1 – Rione Montecchio – Speciality: Pasta al becco con spinaci
Generally speaking September is a perfect time to come over to this part of Tuscany and more in general to Italy.
Flights are easier than in the Summer and the season is still perfect to explore and to swim, especially if you can enjoy a heated swimming pool like the one at Ville degli Olivi, our Italian homes in Lajatico.
Of course if you need help to organise your trip to the area Massimo and Arianna & Friends will be happy to help you.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Ciao a tutti,
Luca Catalano (Mr)
